What is Xello and Why Is It Important for Middle School Students?

Xello is an online college and career readiness platform that helps students begin exploring who they are, what they’re good at, and how those strengths connect to future careers and educational pathways. While career planning may sound “far off” for middle schoolers, this stage is actually the perfect time to start building awareness and confidence.

Through Xello, students:

  • Explore interests, skills, and learning preferences

  • Learn about a wide range of careers (including required education and training)

  • Begin connecting school courses to real-world opportunities

  • Practice goal-setting and self-reflection

How Xello supports an Educational Development Plan (EDP):

Each year, Michigan students are required to create an Educational Development Plan (EDP). Xello is the primary tool students use to create and update their Educational Development Plan. An EDP helps students:

  • Reflect on their strengths and interests

  • Set short- and long-term academic goals

  • Make informed course selections in high school

  • Build skills in decision-making and planning

Parents can support this process by asking students about what they’re discovering in Xello and encouraging conversations about interests, goals, and future possibilities.

What Is College Board and Why Does It Matter?

College Board is a national educational organization that provides programs and assessments that students will use throughout middle school and high school. Each student's College Board account will play an important role in their academic journey over the next several years.

What Is College Board Used For?

  • Access to important assessments such as PSAT, SAT, and AP exams in later grades
  • College and career planning tools
  • Score reports and academic progress tracking
  • School-based testing and preparation resources

Carleton Middle School students will create their College Board accounts during 8th grade, prior to taking the PSAT 8 assessment in the Spring.

Account Credentials Matter!

Each student's College Board account is personal and tied to their academic records. Keeping login information accurate and secure is essential because:

  • Test scores and student data are stored in the account
  • Lost usernames or passwords can delay access to scores and school services
  • Incorrect information may cause problems matching test results to the student

How Parents Can Help

  • Keep a record of your child’s username and password in a safe place
  • Make sure the email address connected to the account is one you can access. Do NOT use a school email.
  • Do not share login information with others
  • Help your child understand the importance of protecting their account
